Neoclassicism

1)The term “Neoclassicism" takes a wide attention by scholars. So , what does Neoclassicism mean ?

*It derived from “neo”, new, or revived the artistic ideals of classical Greece, and “classicism”, referring to the works and the major achievements of Greek's writers such as John Dryden, Alexander Pope and Samuel Johnson from the 17th to the late 18th centuries.

*It called also "Age of Reason" . Reason had been assumed to be the highest mental faculty. That also , characterized by rationality, clarity, emotional restraint, order, [ندعوك للتسجيل في المنتدى أو التعريف بنفسك لمعاينة هذا الرابط] ,logic, balance, elegance of diction, dignity , and on an emphasis of form over content. 2)The major themes , ideas and concerns of Neoclassicism depend on the moral not aesthetic

*Through God's mercy , individuals may be saved *Humanity's chief concern : moral improvement

*Literature should be moral , not aesthetic *Science is unimportant

*The physical universe is amoral *Reason should be distrusted

*Should not express an individual personality *Rational person speaking to rational people

*Expresses accepted values *Uses the language of civilized people

*Emphasize clear communication

3) Neoclassicism was a widespread and influential movement in painting arts that began in the 1760s:

In painting it took the form of classical themes and subject matter, using archaeologically correct settings. Neoclassicism arose as a reaction against the decorative Rococo style that had dominated European art

4)The English Neoclassical movement embodied a group of attitudes toward art and human existence .

Ideals of order, logic, restraint, accuracy, "correctness," "restraint," decorum, enable the professionals of various arts to reproduce the structures and themes of Greek originals.

5)For the sake of convenience the Neoclassic period can be divided into three relatively coherent parts:

a)The Restoration Age (1660-1700), in which Milton, and Dryden were the dominant influences;

b)The Augustan Age (1700-1750), in which Pope was the central poetic figure.

c)The Age of Johnson(1750-1798), which was characterized by the mind and personality of the inimitable Samuel Johnson,

6)Neoclassicism represented a reaction against the optimistic, and enthusiastic Renaissance view of man as a being fundamentally good of an infinite potential for intellectual growth.

a)Neoclassical theorists saw man as an imperfect being, inherently sinful, whose potential was limited.

b)They replaced the Renaissance emphasis on the imagination, on invention and experimentation, and on mysticism with an emphasis on order and reason, on restraint, on common sense, and on religious, political, and economic.

c)Neoclassical theorists maintained that man himself was the most appropriate subject of art, and saw art itself as essentially pragmatic as valuable because it was intellectual rather than emotional.

7)Neoclassicism have their own style in prose , poetry and theatre :

a)Literary forms were the essay, letter, satire, parody, burlesque, and the moral fable;

b)In poetry, the favorite verse form was the rhymed couplet, which reached its greatest sophistication in heroic couplet of Pope;

c)In the theatre, we saw the development of the heroic drama, the melodrama .

CoolNeoclassical thinkers could use the past as a guide for the present

a)Because they assumed that human nature was constant regardless of time and place.

d)Neoclassical artists emphasized human characteristics over individual differences

9)There are many differences between Renaissance and Neoclassicists

a)Neoclassicists believed in Greek ideals, in restraint of passions, and valued communication as an exchange rather than individual self-expression. Neoclassicists saw humans as being limited in potential and imperfect in form. They distrusted innovation and invention and believed in exercising restraint in personal expression. The efforts of the neoclassical writers resulted in the creation of a polite, urbane, and witty art form that was as instructive as it was entertaining.

b)The Renaissance celebrated human potential, individualism, imagination, and mysticism.
